Require white papers on the benefits of Web Services to Web 2.0 based products?

Hi,

I would like some material which I can use as reference. They have to be in the form of accredited white papers and I will probably need between 5 and 10 listings of how Web Services Technologies can benefit Web 2.0 based technologies.

Any helpful information is most appreciated.

Why Web 2.0 is not just for geeks but is important to you the marketer?

What is Mashups,APIs,Widgestisation and Web 2.0? and what is the consideration behind the scenes?

The term web 2.0 itself is still open to debate, for a lot of Internet specialists it doesn't mean anything.
The general idea behind web 2.0 is its social dimension. Whereas Internet used to be only used by companies displaying content for passive users, today anybody can be an Internet contributor. All the blogs, forums and chatrooms are typically web 2.0 oriented because they are participative, allow for social networking and give people a way to express themselves and have their voice heard.
Sites like wikipedia, Flickr or YouTube are web 2.0 sites because they rely on user generated content, i.e. content that is created and provided by Internet users and not only companies or Internet specialists.
For marketers, this is an important thing and for many reasons:
- it opens the door to new marketing possibilites, such as viral marketing or more targeted messages addressed to influent people and opinion leaders identified in those social networks
- it fastens the diffusion of information, so a bad new concerning a company is quickly known worldiwde
- Internet users trust their peers much more than a CEO or a company's spokesman, which will ultimately lead companies to stop bullshiting and realize that they no longer talk to passive and naive consumers!

How are each one of you using Web 2.0 to your advantage?

I have become obsessed with learning to make use of the Web 2.0 tools to get more organized and to feed my long planned blogging efforts (on financial and political subjects). I want to know how others are using Web 2.0 tools, and in what combinations. Do you use De.licio.us? Do you use Digg? Do you use Yahoo's My Web and Bookmarks or the new Netscape? Well, in sum, I want to know how other serious readers and surfers organize their information and newsfeeds. Thanks.

I'm making good use of the Web 2.0 services available.

Del.icio.us for my bookmarks
Youtube for my videos
Flickr for my photos
Box.net for my files
Odeo.com for my audio/podcasts
Google Calendar for my calendar needs
Last.fm for my music needs
Digg for daily tech news etc.
Writely.com for my word processing

and the list goes on. I don't think I could honestly live without these tools, they've become pretty much a need :D

Good elearning G8 science course for my kid?

My son wants to be homeschooled - for valid reasons - and I am looking for a good onloine Grade 8 science course for him. Any suggestions?

I don't know of any pre-fab online science courses per se; most science instruction in schools is moving away from pure textbook approaches (one source only) towards more "hands-on" approaches focusing on experimentation and design processes. The online learning resources I've encountered have been just that: tools to draw upon to teach concepts, not fully designed courses for a child to read/work their way through.

It seems to me that if you are going to be responsible for your son's homeschooling your first step is to check out what the topics are that he needs to be learning about in your home state, province or country. Most Departments of Education are posting these online nowadays. Then, to "prime the pump" with some basic information, you could take out a membership with Brainpop.com.

For the planning of some actual learning activities you could look at a resource like Curriculum Navigator at the site listed below. It helps you to plan lesson and unit activities that frequently come with some support materials that are only a click away. Once again, I don't know whether this resource will match up with what your son needs for where you are living.

1. Create an account at:
http://www3.edu.gov.mb.ca/cn/login.jsp

then

2. Click on Create Learning Experiences.

It's pretty straightforward from there on in.

Once again, your government's department of education or local school district is your most accurate resource for what your child should be learning and how they could be learning it.

Good Luck!
Let me know how it goes.

Hi there! Kept thinking about your problem and did some looking. Came up with some more info.

Found the following recommended websites in the homeschooling discussion area. (You might want to check in with people there who are used to dealing with this subject.)

http://www.sonlight.com/by-level.html

http://www.k12.com

The first one is a christian based program that seems to have programming geared to what I assume is your child's age range (12-14); it just seems a little difficult to nail down a clear grade level. The site seemed to be set up in a quite Byzantine manner, so I wasn't able to figure out whether it was set up to take just one subect at that level or whether you need to sign on for the whole program.

The second site (a secular one) was set up very clearly. However after being very clearly labeled Kindergarten to grade five, the science options are just generally labelled by broad categories:Earth Science , Life Science and Physical Science. Their recommendation for grade 8 is essentially "choose one".

I gathered from scanning your other questions that you are based in Ontario. I hadn't been clear on your location when I had first responded to your question. If you are anywhere in Canada, the Curriculum Navigator topics for grade eight science should be applicable.

Wishing you great luck,
Still hoping to hear how it goes.

Hi there!
More information.

Check out http://www.connectionsacadamy.com . They seem to have a very clear grade eight course option.

What is the best language to write web 2.0 applications in?

-PHP is a popular language for database driven sites.
-Java is used for "AJAX" websites.
-Ruby on Rails is getting a lot of attention.
-Python is very popular in some circles.

What is the best language to write web 2.0 applications in and why?

Since Web 2.0 has more to do with methodology than technology, any grouping of technology that serves the purpose of making your site interactive, collaborative and customizable pretty much fits the bill.

Which means, basically, any server-side language will work fine, provided you approach the problem with a good solution.

AJAX is just jargon for HTML, JavaScript and any old server-side scripting language, be it PHP, ASP.NET, JSP, Python, Perl, Ruby, whatever.

You do need a server-side language to help you serve AJAX; which you decide to use depends on a variety of factors, and no one language is better than another.

Java is not used for AJAX Web sites, as you state. Java is another server-side scripting language that is every bit as suitable for use in AJAX as any other server-side language.

What are the hardware requirement to set up a Web 2.0 website?

I thinking of setting a web 2.0 website like Digg.com but what are the hardware requirements I need take to note of, like disk space, traffic, etc? Can normal web hosting companies able to deal with the demand?
anyone know how fast a web 2.0 website grow, with use submit news, post comments, etc. How much disk space you recommend?

If you're willing to pay for the storage space and bandwidth, any decent web hosting company will accommodate you.
